CGI Impact Garage Doors: The Miami Springs Owner’s Guide
We stock and install CGI-compatible impact garage doors throughout Miami Springs, with most complete door replacements running between $3,800 and $7,200 installed depending on size, insulation level, and track hardware. If your door still operates but a component has failed, we can usually source the specific part and have it repaired within a few days. Most Miami Springs homeowners discover a problem the hard way: the door starts grinding halfway up the track, the opener strains against the weight, or a panel shows rust bleeding through the paint after a summer of salt air off the bay.
CGI builds some of the heaviest residential impact doors in the Florida market, and that weight is exactly why they work. It’s also why a failed roller, hinge, or spring on a CGI door is not something to ignore. The longer a damaged component carries that load, the more expensive the secondary damage gets.
Which CGI Models This Applies To
CGI’s garage door line is smaller and more focused than their window catalog. The doors most common in Miami Springs are the CGI 5100 series and the heavier CGI 6200 series, both designed around Miami-Dade and Broward’s High Velocity Hurricane Zone test protocols. Each door leaves the factory with a certification label on the inside face of the bottom panel, usually near the right hinge. That label lists the model, the wind-load rating, and the exact panel thickness. If that label is missing or painted over, you can measure the panel thickness: the 5100 runs about 1-3/4 inches thick, while the 6200 comes in just over 2 inches.
One compatibility gotcha we run into regularly in Miami Springs: CGI uses a proprietary hinge profile on some 6200-series doors that will not accept a generic aftermarket hinge without sloppy panel play. In those cases we recommend the OEM part, even though it costs $18 to $30 more per hinge. For rollers, brackets, and most torsion spring assemblies, a quality aftermarket equivalent from a Miami-Dade approved manufacturer works fine and saves real money. We are an independent service provider, not a CGI factory store, which means we carry both the OEM parts and the aftermarket equivalents and can be straight with you about which one makes sense on your door.
Signs Your CGI Impact Garage Door Is Failing
- The door shudders or jerks at a specific point in the track. Almost always a failing roller or a bent track section. On CGI doors, the added panel weight turns a marginal roller into a flat-spotted one within a few hundred cycles. The shudder is the roller skipping instead of spinning.
- One side of the door sits lower than the other when closed. This usually points to a cable that has stretched unevenly or a torsion spring that has lost tension on one side. A door that closes crooked is putting constant strain on the hinges and the opener rail, and it will get worse.
- The opener motor runs but the door doesn’t move, or moves in slow motion. On a CGI door, this often means the spring has broken and the opener is now trying to dead-lift 300 to 400 pounds. Continuing to press the button burns out the opener motor and scores the track pulleys.
- You can hear the door from inside the house, every time. CGI impact doors are heavy, but a properly balanced door on good rollers should not sound like a freight train. Excess noise means the rollers are worn, the track needs alignment, or the spring is over-wound and forcing the rollers into the track walls.
- Rust is visible at the hinge seams or panel edges. Miami Springs sits close enough to the bay that salt air gets into everything. Once rust starts at a hinge point, the steel swells and the hinge binds. That binding is what eventually snaps the hinge pin or cracks the panel edge.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For Miami Springs specifically, here is what we quote most often:
- Complete CGI impact door installation: $3,800 to $7,200, depending on single vs. double garage width, panel insulation option, and whether we’re reusing your existing tracks or replacing them.
- Single panel replacement (CGI 5100 or 6200): $420 to $680 per panel, supplied and installed. Matching the exact panel color and profile from CGI takes 3 to 10 business days.
- Torsion spring replacement, installed: $260 to $390, including both springs when the door has two. We replace them in pairs because both springs have the same cycle count.
- Roller and hinge replacement, full set installed: $180 to $310, with an upgraded nylon-sleeve roller option for CGI’s heavier doors.
Every quote is a line-item price before we start. No change orders. The work comes with our Done Right Promise: if it’s not done right, we come back and make it right. Ed Winslow grew up in Miami Springs near the old Curtiss Parkway strip, and he’s been installing impact-rated products in this neighborhood long enough to know that a garage door quote should not come with fine print.
DIY or Call Us?
If you want to check a few things yourself, start with the visual stuff: look at the rollers for flat spots, check whether the door sits level, and examine the hinges for rust or play. You can lubricate the rollers and hinges with a garage-door-specific silicone spray, and that will temporarily quiet a noisy door.
What you should not touch is the torsion spring assembly. CGI impact doors use high-tension springs under enough load to remove fingers or worse if the winding bar slips. This is not a standard homeowner repair. The spring, cables, and bottom brackets are all under tension, and a cable that lets go on a 400-pound CGI door is a serious hazard. If your spring is broken, the door is not safe to operate manually, and the only smart move is a call to us at (239) 310-4121. We will quote the repair over the phone and have the truck stocked before we arrive.
FAQs
A properly maintained CGI impact door should last 20 to 25 years in Miami Springs, though the springs will need replacement every 7 to 10 years regardless of door condition. Salt air shortens the life of exposed metal components, so coastal-side homes may see hinge and roller replacement every 5 to 7 years. Call (239) 310-4121 for an honest assessment of what your door actually needs.
Minor dents and surface rust can often be repaired, but once a panel’s steel skin is creased or the foam core is exposed, replacement is the only option that preserves the door’s wind-load rating. Impact certification does not survive a patched panel. We will tell you which side of that line your door falls on when we see it. Estimates are always free.
A complete door replacement takes one day from tear-out to final balance and safety reversal testing. A spring or roller replacement takes 90 minutes to two hours. Panel replacements depend on CGI’s current lead time for color matching, typically 3 to 10 business days from order to install.
We keep the most common CGI 5100 and 6200 components on our trucks: torsion springs in the two most common weights, roller sets, hinge sets, and cable assemblies. Less common parts like specific panel skins or proprietary hinge profiles we order direct and usually have within a week. We also stock compatible parts for PGT, CWS, and ES Windows door systems if you have more than one brand in your home.
